Somi Jeon is a Kpop star who dropped a whopping 26 lbs by combining healthy eating with regular exercise. She has had no surgeries or taken any diet pills—just lots of hard work and dedication.

Who is Somi Jeon?

Somi Jeon is a South Korean singer, model, and television personality. Jeon was born on March 9, 2001, in Ontario, Canada. Her family consists of her parents and a younger sister named Evelyn.

She first appeared on JYP’s reality survival show SIXTEEN. After being eliminated during the final round, she became a member of MNET’s project girl group I.O.I., which debuted in 2016 with their first mini album Chrysalis.

Somi’s career continued to grow after she left JYP Entertainment. In 2019, Somi signed with Black Label and released four singles: “Birthday” (2019), “What You Waiting For” (2020), “Dumb Dumb” (2021), and “XOXO” (2021).

But that’s not all! When off-cam, Somi enjoys traveling and exploring new places! She recently went skydiving and shared an Instagram video of herself doing so:

What Motivated Somi Jeon to Lose Weight?

Somi is no stranger to the challenges of losing weight. In fact, she’s been through some of the hardest times imaginable.

Back in 2016, many netizens taunted her weight gain and criticized her for not looking like a celebrity anymore. 

But she didn’t let it get her down—instead, she decided to get fit by working out and eating healthy. And now that we’ve seen her before and after photos, we can attest that it was totally worth it!

However, her biggest motivation for getting in shape wasn’t just about looking good—it was about finding success as an artist. 

Somi has been working on her solo debut since 2019, which required her to be in top form physically and mentally so that she could perform at her best when it came time for promotions.

How Did Somi Jeon Lose Weight?

In 2019, Somi revealed that she had lost 22 lbs for her upcoming solo debut on an episode of Dingo Music’s “Follow Somi.”

Her agency states that she has been working out regularly with a trainer and eating right. But she doesn’t seem to be following any particular diet plan or even trying to cut calories—instead, she’s just eating less than she was before.

When asked about her diet during a guest appearance on tvN, the singer-songwriter also admits that she has been following a banana-based diet that limits her intake of fat and carbs. 

She said:

“I only ate one banana for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was hard at first but it got easier. I saw great results so I still do it every once in a while.”

The result is that Somi has dropped 8 pounds in just one week! That’s incredible progress!

When it comes to her workout routine, she prefers Pilates over other forms of exercise because it helps her maintain her figure without getting bulky muscles.

In June 2021, Somi shared a photo of herself doing Pilates in a pair of black leggings and a black crop top with the caption:

Jeon also credits her success to working out and being consistent with her exercise routine. 

She said she’d immediately notice it if she didn’t work out for a few days. This helped motivate her to keep going, even when it got hard.

Did She Maintain Her Weight Loss?

Somi is still working out and eating healthy, but she’s not as strict about it as she was in the beginning. She eats whatever she wants on weekends and sometimes will even drink alcohol! 

In an exclusive interview with Studio Waffle, Somi told the host when asked about what other things she’d be doing aside from preparing for her album:

“I think I’d be drinking a lot. Maybe half a bottle? Maybe one bottle when I’m out with a friend?”

Despite her weight loss success, Somi had to deal with numerous health complications that came along with it.

In August 2021, the Kpop idol revealed on MBC FM4U’s “Jun Hyosung’s Dream Radio” that she took IV fluids to help her body recover from the toll of her extreme weight loss.

She said:

“I can’t even say to them now that ‘I’m sick.’ because I told my fans not too worry. But I actually got an IV fluid. I couldn’t say it because I was afraid they would worry.

“I want people to be happy and to not stick at other people’s standards. I love you all and love yourself. Self-love is very important.”

Is Pilates Effective for Losing Weight?

Women’s Health explains that Pilates is an excellent way to strengthen your core, improve posture and flexibility, and increase body awareness. 

However, Pilates is not actually a weight-loss program. 

“Yes, Pilates has many amazing benefits – but helping you drop 10kg in a week is not one of them (and frankly, that’s not the best approach to weight loss anyway).”

It’s not designed to be a weight-loss program, and it can’t help you lose weight on its own—at least not without some serious modifications. But what it can do is make you stronger, more flexible, and more aware of your body’s movements through space. 

“Because weight loss basically comes down to burning more energy than you absorb, people will burn energy at different rates depending on many factors – there’s no ‘one size fits all’ solution. 

“Increasing any kind of exercise is important if weight loss is your goal, as this is how we increase the amount of energy we burn during the day. And with our diet, we can tailor the amount of energy we put in.”
